something weird happened to my old, chinese watercolors - the blue i originally used for the sky suddenly got a scary surface - as if it granulated and chafed at the same time. it was so repulsive that i had to wash it off in the sink with warm water, praying for daylight and making sure i didn't shower the rest of the almost done picture down the drain. i could only thank myself for choosing a paper thick enough to withstand such maltracting ... yet i still managed to dissolve a few of her contours.
